The Google Store is getting a taste of the finer things with the LG Watch Urbane taking its place on the shelf by the end of the month, joining several other smartwatches that run Google’s wearable platform. LG hasn’t spilled any price details, only announcing it will be available in about a week in the U.S. and 12 other countries. It’s likely to cost more than $299 G Watch R given the new watch’s metal build. While the metal exterior and circular watch face put it a step above other watches in the looks department, the specs are right in line with other Android Wear watches. It has the same 1.3-inch, 320x320 P-OLED display, 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, and 410 mAh battery as LG’s G Watch R. Along with trying to differentiate the watch against the competition by giving it more svelte looks, LG is touting two proprietary software features. LG Call lets you access recent calls and favorite contacts. And LG Pulse measures your heart rate during an exercise session. It will report this data to an LG Health app, which the company is still building. There’s a fine line between enhanced features and bloatware, so we’ll have to try these out and see if they elevate Android Wear in any meaningful way. Why this matters: Google has stocked its new store with many of the available Android Wear watches, such as the Moto 360, Samsung Gear Live, and Sony Smartwatch 3. Android Wear has yet to really land a must-have watch that generates the kind of buzz the platform needs. The Watch Urbane certainly has the looks but we’ll have to see how its day-to-day performance checks out, especially with all those new Android Wear features Google is pushing out soon.
